Course Description

This session, led by Pam Marshalla, MA, CCC-SLP, explores the critical topic of carryover in speech therapy—the ability for clients to maintain correct speech production outside the therapy room. Marshalla, a renowned expert in motor speech and articulation therapy, was celebrated as a “clinician’s clinician” for her ability to integrate research and clinical experience into practical, effective strategies. She authored multiple best-selling books and played a key role in advancing the field through her work with the Oral Motor Institute and other organizations.

In this course, Marshalla delves into why some clients struggle with carryover despite achieving correct speech sounds in therapy. She highlights the importance of self-monitoring, speech rate control, cueing techniques, and structured reinforcement strategies. The discussion emphasizes the need to move beyond word-level drills and ensure clients can generalize their skills into real-world conversations. Through case studies and interactive exercises, participants learn how to effectively scaffold speech practice from controlled environments to spontaneous communication.

By implementing Marshalla’s evidence-based techniques, speech therapists can bridge the gap between therapy and everyday communication. Whether using personalized cues, structured conversational prompts, or reinforcement systems, these strategies empower clients to achieve long-term speech success.

Key Learning Questions:
- Why do some clients struggle to generalize correct speech sounds into conversation despite mastering them in therapy?
- What role does self-monitoring play in successful carryover, and how can it be effectively taught?
- How can therapists use behavior management and reinforcement techniques to support long-term carryover success?
