Hilary Sample is a speech-language pathologist and co-owner/co-founder of Communication Rescue Services. Hilary has spent her career working primarily with patients following stroke and brain injury in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital setting. In her role, she advocates bringing attention to the disparities people with communication barriers experience and seeks opportunities for process improvement. Hilary is passionate about improving the quality of healthcare and the quality of life of people with aphasia by supporting their communication needs. She observed the patient-provider communication gap that is well-documented in the literature and exists when communication barriers are present. Hilary partnered with Steven Richman, MD, combining their experience and training to create the Medical Concerns app, which contains embedded supportive conversation tools to improve sharing of information during medical assessment. She has a passion for education, serving as a peer mentor and clinical fellow/student supervisor, developing staff competencies, presentations, and training, guest lecturing at the graduate level, and presenting at state and national conferences. She is now serving as an adjunct professor at Cleveland State University, in addition to her clinical work in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital setting and her work with Communication Rescue Services. Hilary has presented at OSLHA, OSLHA Learning Academy, AMPRA, and ASHA. Unlimited
