Dr. Hope C. Reed, SLPD, CCC-SLP, COM®, F-ASHA, is a nationally recognized speech-language pathologist, educator, and researcher with 25 years of experience. She earned her doctorate in speech-language pathology from Nova Southeastern University and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Since joining the faculty at Alabama A&M University in 2002, Dr. Reed has served as Professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in craniofacial anomalies, articulation, phonology, language, fluency, and school-based methods and materials. As a Certified Orofacial Myologist, Dr. Reed founded the world’s first university-based clinic dedicated to treating orofacial myofunctional disorders in children and adults. Her research spans health literacy, counseling strategies for students and patients, e-learning fatigue, and orofacial myofunctional therapy. Her published works include “Enhancing the Evidence Base in Orofacial Myology,” “Inclusion of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders Content for Communication Sciences and Disorders Students,” and “Rationale for Including Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in University Training Programs.” Dr. Reed presents frequently at conferences ranging from local to international levels. Her clinical background includes work in public schools, private practice, home health care, Head Start programs, and university clinics. She serves on the Editorial Review Board for the International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy and chairs the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). Her contributions have been widely recognized, including the 2008 Distinguished Service Award and the 2013 Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award from the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama. That same year, she was honored at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation’s Annual Founders Breakfast as a nominee for the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement. Dr. Reed has also received numerous commendations and certificates of appreciation for her service to the profession.
