PhD
Dr. Idan A. Blank is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at UCLA. He is also affiliated with UCLA’s Brain Research Institute and the Neuroscience Interdepartmental Program. He received his PhD in Cognitive Science from MIT in 2016, where he worked with Nancy Kanwisher and Ev Fedorenko. Before that, he studied mathematics, psychology, and theatre arts through the Lautman Interdisciplinary Program at Tel Aviv University, obtaining an MA in 2011. Dr. Blank’s research investigates how we understand language in both mind and brain. He uses neuroimaging (primarily fMRI), network neuroscience tools, computational modeling, and behavioral methods to explore which aspects of language comprehension have dedicated neural support, how they interact, and how they change under different circumstances (for example, following injury). He also evaluates how meaning representations generated by AI/ML systems compare to human benchmarks, assessing what linguistic and conceptual knowledge is captured by these systems.
