Irene Hyun-Mee Kim, MA, CCC-SLP, CSRP, CBIS, is a first-generation Korean American, mother of two teenagers, published author, and Lead Medical Speech-Language Pathologist. By day, her work blends science and compassion, contributing to our understanding of the brain and body’s complexities. She is grateful for the opportunity to participate in the recovery process for those affected by neurological and medically complex injuries. She has practiced in a Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) in the beautiful mountain state of Colorado for nearly two decades. Her internship was at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, followed by a fellowship at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in Northern California. Her first position was at Craig Hospital, specializing in spinal cord and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. Irene is passionate about her patients, fueled by a desire to support their recoveries and witness the love of their families. She is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and a Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Professional (CSRP). Fascinated by the mysteries of the brain, she presents nationally and locally on neurological injuries and their challenges. She has been featured on podcasts and is expanding her professional repertoire by offering webinars and educational opportunities. Her dedication to education and patient care exemplifies her commitment to advancing the field and supporting those affected by complex conditions. By night, Irene is an author who seeks to transform life’s most powerful moments into the written word. Her memoir, Korea Reunited, reveals more of her life’s passions: the universal language of love and the importance of uncovering the deeper parts within us—our ancestors and their choices. It is the culmination of more than two decades of gathering her family’s stories, resulting in a deeply personal account of Korea's division. Irene believes everyone has a story and that family narratives help us understand ourselves. Meaning, appreciation, observing nature, and striving for internal happiness are daily practices for Irene, and she seeks to reflect these values in her writing. Her upcoming book will explore the practice of speech-language pathology, including the emotions, love, and challenges of the work, through stories of patients and hospitals.
