Dr. Jack Katz, PhD, CCC-A/SLP, was a renowned audiologist and speech-language pathologist who dedicated over six decades to the study of central auditory disorders. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1956 with a degree in Speech Pathology and went on to earn a master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Syracuse University. Dr. Katz began his doctoral studies in Speech Pathology but later transitioned to Audiology to work with Dr. Aubrey Epstein. He served as a Fulbright-Hays Senior Lecturer at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. He founded the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Menorah Medical Center and taught at the University at Buffalo for 28 years, as well as at the University of Kansas Medical School. In 1972, Dr. Katz published the first edition of the Handbook of Clinical Audiology, a foundational text in the field. After retiring from academia, he opened a private practice, Auditory Processing Service, in Kansas City, from which he later retired. Dr. Katz edited the sixth and seventh editions of the Handbook of Clinical Audiology, two editions of Therapy for Auditory Processing Disorders, and contributed to numerous articles, research projects, and lectures. He was also a co-founder of IGAPS. Dr. Katz’s legacy continues to influence the fields of audiology and speech-language pathology, and he is remembered with deep respect and gratitude by colleagues, students, and the many individuals whose lives he touched through his work.
