Mary Lou Brecht Johnson, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a native of Akron, Ohio, and earned her BA at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH. Then, after completing her master’s degree in Speech & Hearing at Washington University in St. Louis, Mary Lou headed to Denver for her first clinical position and never left. For over 40 years as a speech-language pathologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, Mary Lou honed her methods while helping children and their parents. She delighted in each child’s success and took to heart each struggle and effort. Her two primary areas of specialty were parent-child interaction coaching and providing therapy to children with mild to profound speech production challenges to achieve intelligible speech. She valued her PROMPT Level 1 training, along with other productive techniques acquired over the years.
Mary Lou and her husband, Duane, raised two children—one who was a language “sponge” and the other had mild language delay and speech challenges that improved in 6 months with the application of her many successful techniques.
Now retired from Children’s Hospital Colorado, Mary Lou maintains her company, Help Your Child Speak, LLC, as an author. Her first book, Help Your Child Speak: The Interactive Guidebook just released in January 2026. Also, check out her blog at www.HelpYourChildSpeak.com. Unlimited
