Reem Khamis

Reem Khamis, Ph.D., CCC-SLP (also published as Reem Khamis-Dakwar), is a Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Long Island University–Brooklyn and Professor Emerita at Adelphi University. She directs the Culture, Language, and Society in Speech-Language Therapy (CLaS) Lab. Her research examines language development and processing within sociolinguistically diverse communities, with particular expertise in Arabic diglossia, multilingualism, and culturally and linguistically responsive assessment and intervention. Her more recent scholarship focuses on social justice in the speech, language, and hearing sciences (SLHS), including critical examination of the frameworks, ideologies, and assumptions underlying clinical practice and professional education.
Dr. Khamis is a founding Managing Co-Editor of the Journal of the Critical Study of Communication and Disability and previously served as Language Section Editor for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research (JSLHR). She is the recipient of the 2020 Excellence in Diversity Award from the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD).
