Dr. Travis Threats, PhD, CCC-SLP, FNAP, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences at Saint Louis University. A nationally and internationally recognized leader in the field, Dr. Threats has authored over 50 publications and delivered more than 100 invited presentations at conferences across the globe, including keynote addresses in Chile, Greece, Portugal, the Philippines, Slovenia, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. His research and grant participation span major institutions such as the Department of Defense, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Department of Education’s National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and the Food and Drug Administration. In 2019, he was invited by the government of the United Arab Emirates to evaluate the development of the country’s first academic program in speech-language pathology, and he has consulted with the government of Taiwan on integrating the ICF framework into their healthcare electronic records. Dr. Threats is an ASHA Fellow and received ASHA’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Contributions in International Achievement in 2012. He is a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP), a health professional organization that promotes interdisciplinary approaches to improve healthcare outcomes and advises Congress and state governments on policy reform. In 2022, he received ASHA’s highest honor—Honors of the Association—for contributions that have profoundly shaped the profession. Before entering academia, Dr. Threats practiced as a speech-language pathologist in long-term care, rehabilitation hospitals, acute care university hospitals, and outpatient facilities. He has taught courses in acquired neurogenic communication and cognitive disorders across the lifespan.
